When faced with the seemingly endless immensity and grandeur of the universe, the vast diversity and history of the animal kingdom, the uncharted depths of the oceans and all the mysteries they contain, we can feel insignificant and unimportant – a tiny blip in an age-old drama, a microbe on a planetary dust molecule, one creature among many creatures.
But Scripture reveals that humankind has a significant and prominent role in the creation. As the final and crowning jewel of His creative work, God created humankind, male and female, to rule over His creation and to represent Him on the earth.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 1:26
Throughout the pages of Scripture, we see God’s plan for humanity unfold. Man was created in the image of God, to know God and enjoy fellowship with Him (Genesis 3:8-9), and in the end, man will indeed again dwell with God in perfect harmony (Revelation 21:3).
He made from one man every nation of mankind to inhabit all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and exist.
